A visit to Breen Boats near Rockwood, Ontario.

Many thanks to our secret sleuth, N.H., and to Peter Breen and his son Jeff for providing photos and infromation on several of the extraordinary projects underway at Breen Boats. Peter’s shop is the first on the agenda for the ACBS (Toronto Chapter) spring tour of Ontario boat shops.

“I had the special opportunity to see probably one of the most significant boats built for use in Muskoka in the past 30 years;
The signature project being delivered this spring is a 31’ Bob Tail Torpedo Hull Gentleman’s Racer, based from a 1920s design, style, and hardware.
This is an extremely complex hull to construct because of the Torpedo hull;

 Margaret Shirley  (above) features exposed copper screw heads, custom sand-casted hardware, cable and pulley steering, vernier aircraft throttle, dual long-range gas tanks,  and a high performance Ilmor engineering power plant  producing 570 hp

Jeffrey Breen has just finished a 29ft Breen Gentlemans Racer in the Ditchburn style that is just spectacular in its. lines. The Ilmor engine will really get this boat up to some significant speeds. Features include dovetail hatches, elaborate inlay work in the cockpit, self-standing bucket seating, and period sand-casted hardware.

I also saw a really interesting Century Arabian (above) that has been restored complete with wifi, built in cooler, a superb sound system and the finest blue upholstery you’re ever going to find.

In fact the boat is so luxurious  it has a living room feel;

It is actually a very elaborate bar that comes with a complete cover to protect the boat against the elements for use on an island on Georgian Bay.

The Grand Duke is owned by boat collecting pioneer Jim Grand, whose family has owned it since new. it is a rare mahogany planked boat with a lots of seating and a curved glass windshield…a spectacular boat in its time.

There was also a lesson in keeping your boat insurance up to date (above) as there was a 30ft Ditchburn boat that was restored last year; it was returned to Peter Breen three weeks ago after the wet snow on the storage building  roof buckled under the weight and crumpled the forward ten feet, as well as other areas of the boat;  I am sure Peter and his staff will have this looking perfect in due course.

Also in the shop is Hope II,  a 24 foot WJ Johnson triple cockpit with a 5.7 litre Mercruiser engine for power. This is a really spectacular boat.

The Ditchburn Viking 27 foot model was the first production built step hull in the world. Ponder is one of these boats; it features a 4 inch step, and is a wonderful boat recently refreshed. Also on site, is Lady Eaton’s Viking, Mint Julep.

There was also a Matheson lapstrake 16ft row boat (above) that was beautifully varnished and ready for the water.

Also in was a 28 foot Breen Gentleman’s racer  and a 28 foot Ditchburn triple cockpit for a refresh of the varnish finish.”

Enjoy the photos below.

ACBS Toronto Spring Boat Shop Tour, 2019. Part I

$

Last week we we began our Spring Tour with a visit to Peter Breen’s boat shop in southern Ontario. We continue the tour today with a stop at James Osler’s shop near Port Carling Ontario, then on to Duke Boats, Curtis Hillman’s facilit and Stan Hunter’s shop in Milford Bay. Despite extreme flooding, on the Muskoka Lakes, the “show went on!”

This Chris-Craft Riviera has had some major work undertaken

It was really wonderful to catch a glimpse of this one-hundred-plus year old steam launch, currently operated from Lake Rosseau. What a beautiful piece of living marine history! James reports that the owner regularly uses the boat and takes it “all over the place!” The steamer is in for some new caulking and other refurbishments.  (Photos below)

I wonder if engineering papers are required to operate this steamboat!

Historic beauty and grace.

This SeaBird has had major woodwork and engine work undertaken. It is currently on the market. The owner will consider reasonable offers.

As you can see, flooding in Muskoka this spring has been extreme. Luckily, Duke’s workshop is on the upper level!

This SeaBird is certainly one of the company’s more “upscale” models.

The Greavette Streamliner seen here has had “major surgery, including a new bottom.

The Greavette has been re-powered with a beefier, new and (dare we say it?) reliable power plant!

Curtis Hillman’s recent projects include several smaller watercraft, soon to shine again under his care and skill. Photos below.

Stay tuned for more photos and videos of the 2019 ACBS Toronto Chapter Spring Tour!

Congratulations to the seller and buyer of this handsome 19 foot Kavalk Continental. Built in 1990 and refurbished in 2007, the boat is in beautiful condition. It features a rebuilt V8 engine and comes complete with a tandem axle trailer. With a top speed of 60 mph, this boat really flies. The very reasonable asking price of $29,500  was no doubt a factor in the sale.
We received the a kind note below from the vendor after the transaction was completed.  (Boats do sell on the Port Carling Boats website!)

“Hi Rob,
I am pleased to advise that indeed I did find the ideal buyer and we closed yesterday.
The buyer is from BC who met the builder in 1992 and wanted a Kavalk ever since. He flew out the next day and we concluded in spite of not having enough time to wash or otherwise prepare for a proper showing; right our of the shed!
Thanks so much for your wonderful ad and I will be sure to call on you again as needs arise.
Neil McLaughlin”

The next part of our tour includes stops at Stan Hunter’s Milford Bay shop, Tim Butson’s shop in Bracebridge and Paul Brackley’s shop in Gravenhurst
Below:
Stan is gradually reducing his armada of “woodies”. We expect that there will still be some Duke Playmates like the one pictured below, for rental this summer.

Wen-O-Wae is surely content with the varnish work and other refurbishments undertaken at Stan’s shop.

Tim Butson has lots on the go this spring. The Greavette dispro below has benefitted from new bottom planks, amng other work.

The double ended row boat, below, offers two rowing positions.  Commonplace in the early 1900s, these vessels were known for their “courting opportunities!”

New ribs, anyone?  (below)

The Century Resorter pictured below, is reaching the final stages of her “refreshing”.

This Butson Gentleman’s racer was built by a Butson grandfather…in the shop now for some tidy up.

The Chris-Craft below is almost ready for relaunch. What a beautifull varnish job!

As well as an enormous yacht tender,  (to be described in our upcoming video) Paul and his staff are performing major surgery on Wimur II, a thirty-four foot iconic Muskoka stepped-hull vessel. Wimur will be repowered with a modern V8 engine.
