We know they’re not vintage boats, but…

1935 Packard Twelve Coupe Roadster: 175 hp V12 engine. The car was first purchased by the owner of National Grocers
many of our viewers also appreciate beautiful, rare and exotic classic automobiles. There was certainly no shortage of the above at the Toronto International Car Show, one of the largest in North America. Among the plethora of new vehicles was an exhibit devoted to exotic cars and a selection of elegant masterpieces featured at the Cobble Beach, Ontario, Concours D’Elegance. The photos below tell the story. (Stay tuned for the upcoming video.)

This Packard had a premier “body by Dietrich” design. This is only one of six remaining such Roadsters.

1929 Duesenberg Model J Dual Cowl Phaeton. FIrst owned by Roxy Rothafel of Roxy Theatre and Radio City Music Hall. The car was restored in 1953.

Mr. Letts, a previous owner, stated that the car cruised best at 65-70 m.p.h. but that 90m.p.h in second gear is not an exaggeration! The Duesenberg was again restored in 2010.

The Duesenberg has made a number of forays into Canada and is the recipient of numerous awards.

1941 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible Coupe. Owned by the Cadman family since 1993. The ‘Caddy,” ,which was restored in 2014, received some modifcations from factory specs, These were undertaken by a Cincinnati coach builder, when the car was initially delivered by G.M. in April, 1941

Cadillac Coupe De Ville prototype. 1949. This custom hard top was the super star on display at the Waldorf Astoria Auto Show held in New York in 1949.. It was originally owned by the president of G.M., Charles Wilson, who went on to become Secretary of Defense for President Eisenhower.

1955 Packard Caribbean Convertible. This car is #389 of 500 built. It is powered by an OHV 352 cubic inch V8 engine. with ultramatic transmission, power brakes, steering, windows and seats…even dual heaters. “A fantastic ride.”
A further look at the beautiful vintage and exotic autos at the 2017 Toronto Car Show
From an 1867 Steam Buggy to a 2017 Toyota Concept Car, the Toronto Car Show offered lots to admire in the “vintage and exotic” department. Enjoy the video below.
New price on virtually new Peterborough Phantom.
We have been instructed by the owners to reduce the price on this new-condition Peterborough Phantom 12′, 1969, to $28,500. The boat was originally priced at $35,000
Notes from the owner below:
RARE – one of the last boats made by Peterborough Boat Co. – possibly the only one of this model made!
A two-seater speedboat with a molded mahogany hull in PRISTINE, ORIGINAL condition. Always stored indoors and only hauled in a closed, single axle boat trailer which is included in the sale. Hasn’t been in the water for over 30 years. Comes with an 18 hp Evinrude Fastwin with remote controls.
All original hull, decking, no restoration work done or needed. There is a vinyl cover on the seat but can be taken off – underneath is the original solid fibreglass seat. Includes running lights, compass, speedometer – all original. Compass and flag are stored off boat.
This boat was sold new in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan by Eaton’s. On delivery, the buyer noticed that there were indentations on the transom that looked like a motor had been mounted on it. We surmise that this is the boat that was used for the photograph of the Phantom in the last Peterborough Boat Company catalog. The photograph showed the boat in the water at high speed. After extensive searching, we have been unable to locate another of this model. This boat is currently in Saskatchewan.
Price: $28,500 (Owner is willing to negotiate)

A Peterborough Handiboy is resurrected by a very competent “amateur’ restorer.
Our hearty congratulations to Ken Robinson of Owen Sound, who recently completed a total restoration of the Peterborough Handiboy shown in the photos below. Ken really worked miracles with the boat, which was featured partially completed on our website this past year. Ken is now on the hunt for period-correct hardware to complete the Peterborough. This boat was his first restoration. We hope that Ken’s success will inspire other wooden boat devotees to take the plunge and get their hands covered with sawdust and varnish!
Ken took a very tired “Handiboy” from this….

ACBS Toronto Winter Workshop was a “roaring” success.

Some sixty enthusiasts attended the session at Parry Automotive.

Carburetor basics were explored. Most point gaps, for example, are 16 to 18 thousands of an inch!
Hats off to Jeff Titshall and the other staff at Parry Automotive in Orillia, Ontario, who graciously hosted a well attended workshop on marine engines.
Included in the session was information on distributors (hands on), carburetors, oils, transmissions, pistons, blocks and the effects of ethanol in gasoline.
Rony Haylock, of Ronny’s Marine, was also on hand with a beautifully restored “fibre-glassic”. The morning’s acitivites were much appreciated by attendees, as was the generous gift package handed out to all. Many thanks to Parry Automotive and Toronto Chapter ACBS for hosting this very successful event.
Enjoy the photos and video below.

Cylinder compression should not vary more than 5 pounds per sqaure inch through all cylinders.

Ronny Haylock uses a high lustre paint topsides on his “fibreglassics” ( rather than a gelcoat, which will fade.)

Removing the top plate allows viewers to see how the forward and reverse gear works in an marine transmission.
Bergersen Boats does it again: a magnificent 27 ft. Shepherd Twin Engine Express Cruiser.
Congratulations to the staff at Bergersen Boats, who recently completed the restoration of this stunning Shepherd Twin Engine Express Cruiser. Please see notes and photos from the restorers below.
“1953 27′ Shepherd ‘Falcon’
This amazing craft was painstakingly restored by Bergersen Boat Co. This hull is #13 in the first series of 27′ Shepherds built with a beam of 9′ 6”. This boat boasts the rare 331 Chrysler Hemis first offered in 1953. The engines were just overhauled including the Chrysler V-drive transmissions that have all reconditioned clutch packs and seals.
Top speed is 42 mph. This boat comes complete with kerosene stove top, head, original stainless cooler and sink. The bottom is original and the hull sides have been refastened with silicon bronze screws. All bungs were made from original old stock Honduras Mahogany from a ‘donor Shepherd’.
This craft has the original throttle and shift control levers that have been custom machined to operate modern control cables. You will never find a smoother shift on a Shepherd. The 200+ HP Chrysler Hemi’s have modern Delco electronic ignition systems that we machined parts and adapters to accept this incredible upgrade.
With this new ignition system the engines run better than they did when brand new. The boat has 15 coats of Epifanes varnish just applied, restored windlass winch for the anchor, a custom built mahogany swim platform which mirrors the intricate Bubinga and teak grating on the floor in the boat. Winner of the 2016 Geneva Lakes Boat Show Captain’s Choice Award.

A comprehensive restoration was completed in 1998 including the finishes being stripped down to bare wood from top to bottom. The bottom was redone with Interlux antifouling paint and above the water line it was primed with epoxy primer and top coated with acrylic polyurethane. The teak decks where sanded down to fresh wood and recoated with Tuffshield for a virtually maintenance free finish. The swim platform and all other miscellaneous teak surfaces were also refinished.
In 2000 the engines were upgraded with twin 8L V10s (see advancedmarinepropulsion.com). The vessel continues to be stored inside during the off-season and looks and performs as best in class.
In addition to the engines and surface finishes the alcohol counter burners have been replaced with electric burners. All engine gauges were rebuilt in the 1980s and all of the wiring was upgraded or replaced to ABYC standards. All instrumentation is in A-1 working order.
