It’s the middle of winter and snow is our immediate world. That doesn’t mean we can’t catch ond imagine a piece of summer fun. Each winter, near the end of January, North America’s largest indoor boat show is held in Toronto. All the latest water toys are on display and some can be tested out in the “lake”.

Last year, the Muskoka Seaflea Club brought down a few boats to “race” around the pond. Wooden boats are always a part of the show. There is “Kid’s and Classics” display as well as representation by the Toronto Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society.

The show runs from January 18th to 26th at the Enercare Centre. This is the 67th annual Toronto International Boat Show.

Of special interest to many will be the demonstration of electric power. Electric outboards offer a wonderful opportunity to have a quiet ride in a wooden cedar strip. While there may be nostalgic pleasures for the rattle of a vintage Johnson red and white, or a white 6hp or black 9.8 Mercury, I’ll take the quiet hum of an electric outboard. Imagine being free of mixing gas, its smell and storage! Electric outboards have proven very effective on small sailboats and could bring new life to a Geisler or vintage Peterborough cedar strip.
