It is time we look back and reflect on the events and icons that have stood out from generation to generation. Wooden boats certainly play a big role in the collective memory of Muskoka seasonal and permanent residents and visitors alike. For many, the steamships may stand out as icons that have spanned the generations. From the Cherokee, to the Nipissing, the Segwun, the Sagamo and the Islander, they have played an important role in the summers of generations. Think of the weddings, the summer transport service to ports not serviced by a road. The evening cruises with music from Hugh Clairmont and musicians from the Big Band Era. The steamships are icons unparalleled and continue to be so. Their service reminds us of some of the few remaining hotels that are icons in their communities.

Windermere House especially, with its spectacular view over Lake Rosseau, has a special place in the memory of many. I also remember Elgin House, Paignton House and Glen Home, a personal favourite with my parents when it was owned by Lisa and Paul Love. One of the most successful and memorable Dispro regattas was held at Clevelands House. The Summer Water Ski services located there for years, always yielded great subjects for the weekly Muskoka Sun sunshine girl feature. While these icons and others, are an important part of what has created the mystique and allure of this summer playground, never forget the folks living here year round, who provide the services that keep everything working.
