DOA is all About Fellowship

With all the Dispros tucked away for the winter or in for some service, you might wonder what comes next when it comes to wooden boating for the Disappearing Propeller Association or any other boating group.

I’ve said it before, that the boats represent heritage and entertainment, but mostly they represent a kind of fellowship that brings people together over a common interest. So it was that despite the threat of wintry weather, a contingent of Muskoka-based DOA members have decided to gather monthly to keep memories alive and to plan for coming summer season.

Patterson-Kaye Lodge, the location of many Dispro Regattas over the years, hosted a dinner for our little group. There on the wall in the front foyer is a group photo of the DOA’s 40th regatta in 2014.  Through the initiative of Karen Boyer and Mary Storey, about 30 members committed to the repast. We learned that Karen’s dispro has been chosen to represent the design at the Toronto International Boat Show in January. It is exciting to share the curiosities of wooden boating, such as the Dispro with a big audience. The Dispro will be transported in a closed trailer to the show.

The Muskoka region has a variety of social clubs, such as like PROBUS and Rotary, but nothing compares to the energy and interest given to the Dispro. Just because the boats are up on beams resting for the winter doesn’t mean wooden boating action is resting too!
